Step 2

Basic Prototype

We design your invention into the perfect version of the product. Then we do a proof-of-principle prototype of it.

But you must get this step done before filing your full non-provisional patent application. If you don’t and instead only get it done after filing your full patent application, the design of your invention may develop, evolve and change and you’ll then have to file ANOTHER full patent application if those new developments are patentable and you want to protect them.

In other words, you’ll have to go through the patenting system twice. Try to avoid this at all cost.

The Inventor's Journey™ Map

You’re on step 2 of the Inventor’s Journey™!

Maybe the most important step of The Inventor’s Journey™ in terms of development of both the product AND your patenting. This is where your product concept may undergo a metamorphosis into the ‘perfect version’ of the product. That, allied with a proof-of-principle prototype being made of the ‘perfect version’, often generates hugely important new patentable matter that could set you up for Perfect patent protection in the next step.

Basic Summary From The Captain

In order to have the best chance of winning, your invention has to be designed into the absolute best version of your product concept. In many cases, this needs the help of a professional product designer.

More specifically, it will tend to need a product designer with particular skills/abilities in terms of ‘user-interface’ product design, because this is the type of product designer that can design your invention concept into the best possible version of the product.

Not only is this important in terms of making the PRODUCT as good as it can be, but it also often generates important new patentable material, potentially having huge benefits to the PATENTING of your invention.

The key thing is that the process of your product being designed into the perfect version has to be done BEFORE your full non-provisional patent application is filed at the patent office, because if you file the patent application first, you may well have to then file a whole new SECOND patent application to include the design developments that happen after. I call that the dreaded ‘double-pass’ of the patenting, and it’s something to avoid if at all possible.

So this step is key not only to making your product as great as it can possibly be- it often turns out to be a key step in terms of the patenting of your invention, unearthing new patentable material.

Just another example of how The Inventor’s Journey™ 5 step system knows how to get things done in the right order to give you and your invention the best chance of winning.

SERVICE AT THIS STEP

PerfectProduct™ Basic Prototype

In the PerfectProduct™ Basic Prototype service, one of our professional product designers will communicate with you about your invention, and design your invention concept into the perfect version of the product.

Then they’ll prototype it, creating a prototype that tests its function and that may well improve the design even more.

How It Works

PART 1: DESIGN PHASE

1. Creating the 'Perfect' Design

One of our product development providers designs your invention into the perfect final design of the product. Although there might be instances where the inventor brings us a product in its final form, more often, the invention needs to be refined into its ‘perfect’ version. This is to optimise your product and increase its chances of success.

2. Presenting you with the ‘Perfect’ Design

This often culminates in a consultation with you, where your product development provider presents the perfect version they’ve designed. This may include presenting some preliminary 3D modelling, or perhaps high-quality concept sketches. Once the design is approved by the inventor, we proceed to the prototype creation.

PART 2: Prototype Phase

3. Execution of the Proof-of-Principle Prototype of the Perfect Design

We then create a Proof of Principle prototype of the perfect design. The focus at this stage is on building a functional version, even if it’s not visually appealing, for functionality testing and potential design improvements. However, especially with 3D printing, the results can sometimes be extremely impressive. (Whilst this process often involves 3D printing, it ultimately depends on the product type).

A huge bonus of this process is that, in most cases, it generates new patentable material, since the ‘perfect design’ usually includes new inventive features/steps beyond the original concept, and problems encountered during the prototyping that are solved often generate important (or maybe even pivotal) new patentable matter. This is the reason we do this step BEFORE your full patent application in the next step- so that your full patent application can include these new important inventive steps and features, which could even become pivotal to your patenting.

Jethro was very proactive in helping with well-thought-out suggestions and counsel with ideas and execution of making my invention it's very best. He offered brilliant suggestions that encouraged strategic decisions that are truly imperative which will help save time and money. Also his ability and mastering of his State-of-the-art 3D printer is ingenious, enabling fast rapid prototyping, thorough evaluation of the success of the design of my invention, and help make quick, affordable adaptations where needed. Jethro is a 'brilliant, silent-partner' in the inventive journey, and I'd refer to him anyone who is looking to patent a dream.

Anything in particular that you liked, or found impressive?

Jethro is like 2 experts in one.

My invention idea was quite basic, and Shiine suggested building a 3d printed working model, with the possibility of making improvements to the concept, of things that I hadn't even thought of. At first, I was skeptical, but I decided to give it a try, and boy I'm so glad I did. The prototype they created, which had an amazing innovative improvement to my idea, was nothing short of breathtaking. Shiine didn’t just bring my invention to life, they improved it with a massive benefit. I felt as though my invention had undergone a magical metamorphosis right before my eyes. It was very exciting to see, and the added innovative function it now has gives me way more confidence in the prospects for my invention than before.

Anything in particular that you liked, or found impressive?

Their ability to see potential where I hadn't even considered it, and innovate outside the box is remarkable, thank you Shiine for helping me realize the full potential of my invention.
